"The Battle of the Alamo" was fought on March 6, 1836 between rebellious Texans and the Mexican army. The Alamo was a fortified old mission in the center of the town of San Antonio de Béxar: it was defended by about 200 rebellious Texans, chief among them Lt. Colonel William Travis, famed frontiersman Jim Bowie and former Congressman Davy Crockett. They were opposed by a massive Mexican army led by President/General Antonio López de Santa Anna. After a two-week siege, Mexican forces attacked at dawn on March 6: the Alamo was overrun in less than two hours. "The Alamo" was filmed in 1960, directed by John Wayne, who also starred as Davy Crockett. The score (featuring the song "The Green Leaves of Summer") was composed by Dimitri Tiomkin (with song lyrics by Paul Francis Webster), and has been released numerous times, including a version of The Green Leaves of Summer originally performed by The Brothers Four. Lyrics: Let the old men tell the story Let the legend grow and grow Of the thirteen days of glory At the seige of Alamo. Lift the tattered banners proudly While the eyes of Texas shine. Let the fort that was a mission Be an everlasting shrine. Once they fought to give us freedom. That is all we need to know Of the thirteen days of glory At the seige of Alamo ... A time to be reaping, a time to be sowing, The green leaves of summer are calling me home. It was good to be young then in the season of plenty When the catfish were jumping as high as the sky. A time just for planting, a time just for plowing, A time to be courtin' a girl of your own. T'was so good to be young then, to be close to the earth, And to stand by your wife at the moment of birth. The green leaves of summer are calling me home ...
